Invented nearly a century ago by San Francisco-based cosmetics manufacturer, Luis Marcus, bobby pins were created to tame one of the most iconic haircuts of the 1920s, known as the “bob”.

Through the decades, bobby pins have mainly been tucked and hidden within elaborate hairdos, to keep them in place. Though decorative versions of these hairpins have been around for some time, a recent trend is to wear multiple, fancier pins, in geometric formations.

No longer are we limited to using ugly brown pins. Modern bobby pins come in gorgeous varieties such as embellished rose gold, multi-colored, crystal-studded, and stone encrusted.

Ways to wear this trend:

  • Use various pins to create a sleek chevron design on one side of your head

  • Pull a section of hair back and criss-cross two pins to keep it in place

  • Create a chic updo and add decorative pins throughout to take it to the next level

  • Dutch braid one strand of hair and tuck embellished pins in it to enhance the look

Bobby pins are no longer strictly utilitarian. Stock up on these affordable accessories and sport a new do each day this summer.
